Louis Gabos of Routt County
was present during the inspection.
The inspection was conducted at the request of the County in lieu of submittal of a 112
Conversion Application. The application has yet to be submitted to the Division, but the
County intends to submit the application before the end of the year.
The Funk & Hooker Pit is located approximately 1.5 miles east of Hayden in Routt County,
Colorado. The 110 Limited Impact Operation permit was issued to the County on April 16, 1979
for a permit area of 3 acres. The permit was amended in 1985 to increase the permit area to
9.9 acres. The anticipated conversion application will range in size from 30-40 acres.
A mine identification sign was posted at the mine entrance. Mining is currently taking place
in a southern direction. The pit is being mined at a 2h:ly slope. According to the permit
file, the pit has been in existence prior to 1972. As a result, the original topsoil and
overburden are no longer available. However, the County has committed to spread 4-6 inches
of topsoil over the 9.9-acre permit area. The operator informed the Division that pit slopes
will be reclaimed to approximately 4h:ly.
The proposed 112-conversion area will continue mining towards the southeast on land that is
currently being cultivated. The land is owned by James Funk. The new permit area includes
three mining phases; Phase I is 5.36 acres, Phase II is 7.93 acres and Phase III is 2.86
acres. In addition, permit area is set aside for overburden and topsoil stockpiles. The
total permit area will range from 30-40 acres. The proposed conversion area is not located
adjacent to any permanent man made structures. The mining limits will not include the
drainage Swale located on the western portion of the site. The northern portion of the site
will eventually daylight to the adjacent land.
No problems were noted as a result of this inspection.
I & E Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Mr. Louis G.
