~~1
i
UPS
7.

Iron sulfate (brown deposits) on rock substrate at Site FS2. Thick
iron hydroxide, (white deposits) like F53 do not occur at this site.
A nitric acid neachate from this site (0.7$) had an iron concentra-
tion of 111 mg/1 and an arsenic concentration of .145mg/l.
The chemical results and site observations at F52 and F53 are somewhat perplex-
ing. If the Gold Dollar Mine spill during 8/86 was the primary source of acid
material then the water quality at FS2 would be expected to be better than F53.
Site F53 has much higher turbidity and iron deposits than FS2 but slightly nigher
pH. Obviously considerable acid drainage (natural or mining) occurs upstream of
FS2. Some natural acid drainage was observed on the south valley sides between
Sites FS3 and FS2. What is apparent is that a substantial water quality problem
exists in the East Marcos River and that more cn the ground investigation and
water quality sampling, particularly above Site F52, will be needed in 1988 to
determine exact sources and treatirent options.
Fs~a:co~_en~e2i
