7. COM, Inc. further notes that the estimated 5 to 10.7 gpm "capacity" required by the
DMG is not necessary to maintain a negative water balance at the site. According to a
February 27, 1996 letter from Allen Sorenson of the DMG, the Hazel A adit inflow
rate is estimated to be 1.69 gpm in the dry season and "1 or 2 gpm more" in the wet
season. The "design capacit}~' of the evaporation system should therefore be
approximately 2.69 to 3.69 gpm, plus a small safety factor to account for rainfall.
COM, Inc. concludes that an evaporation system capable of less than 4 gpm should be
adequate, instead of the 5 to 10.7 gpm required by the DMG.
8. Finally, COM Inc. would Gke to point out that the evaporation system does not need
to be operated continuously. If the system receives less than 4 gpm of water, and
evaporates 15 gpm, then it only needs to operate roughly 25% of the time, even in the
wet season.
REFERENCES:
December 18, 1995 letter from Richard Fox, P.E. to Mr. Allen Sorenson of the Colorado
Department of Natural Resources, Re: Hazel A Water Storage Capacity and Evaporation
for Modified Tailings Pond Permit No. M-94-117, COM Inc.
January 9, 19961etter from Richazd Fox, P.E. to Mr. Allen Sorenson of the Colorado
Department of Natural Resources, Re: Water Storage Capacity for Modified Tailings
Pond and Hazel A Permit No. M-94-117, COM Inc.
February 27, 1996 letter from Mr. Allen Sorenson of the Colorado Department of Natural
Resources to Mr. Richard Fanyo, Dufford and Brown, Re: Water Balance, Gold Hill Mill;
Colina Oro Molino (COM), Inc., Permit No. M-94-117.
March 17, 1996 letter from Richard Fob P.E. to Mr. Allen Sorenson of the Colorado
Department of Natural Resources, Re: Water Spray Evaporation Calculations and
Design, Gold Hill Mill, File No. M-94-117.
Mazch 18, 1996 letter from Mr. Alan Sorenson of the Colorado Department of Natural
Resources to Mr. Richard Fox, Re: Water Spray Evaporation System, Gold Hill Mill,
Colina Oro Molino, Inc., Permit No. M-94-117.
10/15/97
