(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-2004-084
INSPECTION DATE 3-3-2005 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS SSS
OBSERVATIONS
This was apre-operational inspection of the Benson Brothers Pig Mesa Pit site for the original 112c permit application.
No permanent man-made structures, other than the cistern and fences noted in the permit, were located on site.
No exposed groundwater was noted and none is expected to be encountered due to the location of this site on the edge of a
bluff.
Vegetation is very sparse and consists mostly of annuals such as cheatgrass, halogeton, Russian thistle and tumble mustard.
Scattered shrubs such as Mat saltbush, shadscale, and Gardner saltbush dot the site as well as scattered prickly pear cactus.
Perennials also include some galleta and alkali sacaton in the drainage bottoms that encompass a very small portion of this site
acreage. Benson Brothers will need to verify that none of the drainages in the northeast corner of the site, to be filled and
leveled for use as a processing area, contain any wetlands requiring mitigative measures.
The upland portion of the site has two rather large areas that were obviously disturbed prior to application for this permit. Ed
Benson indicated that these two swaths of cleared vegetation and leveled land were constructed for the locals to use as
runways for model airplane flights. Numerous broken propellers were noted on these locations.
The required posting of the notice of pending application for a reclamation permit was in place at the proposed site access.
The portion of the site covered by the Orchard Clay Loam does appear to support somewhat better vegetation, including more
grasses, than does the other portions of the site. DMG again recommends that this soil be salvaged and utilized for
reclamation of the site.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Steve Shuey at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Grand Junction
Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone number 970-243-6368.
I & E Contact Address
NAME
OPERATOR
STREET
CITY/STATE/ZIP
Ed Benson
Benson Brothers
21240 Austin Road
Austin.
