Grouting of the concrete alit plug was
underway at the time of this inspection, and the Operator reported that work on grouting of the plug
had been occurring for approximately three weeks. All flows from the adit were being routed into the
infiltration trench. Flow at the time of this inspection was approximately 29 gpm.
The toe of the 9360 waste dump was inspected. Vein material comprises a small but significant
percentage of the mine dump as it is exposed at the surface. The vein material observed contains
barite, amethyst, galena, and pyrite. The Operator reports that this vein material may be from the
Equity Mine in the northern extension of the Creede District, and was stockpiled at Bulldog for
metallurgical testing. A small amount of junk and debris was observed in the toe area of the mine
dump, including a 65-gallon drum and some Styrofoam insulation. This trash must be removed and
properly disposed of. The springs emerging at the toe of the dump that were described in the
Division's 6/1/98 inspection report were inspected. These springs are located near the south terminus
of the waste dump; the springs discharge to Windy Gulch. The upper spring was not flowing at the time
of this inspection; the lower spring was flowing. The discharge from the Windy Gulch bypass culvert
was in surges and amounted to only a trickle. The Operator reports that water quality data from June
1998 sampling of these springs is now available, and that some historic data for the springs may also
be available. This data must be provided to the Division for evaluation of potential impacts to the
hydrologic balance. The Operator reports that these springs have been observed by Bulldog mine
personnel for many years, and speculates that the emergent locations are the intersection of the mine
dump with relict channels of Windy Gulch that are now buried by the dump.
The 9700 portal area was inspected. This portal had been reopened to provide ventilation for the 9360
adit rehabilitation project. The portal was recently bac kf filled. This backf ill will have to be
monitored for settling or slumping over the next year. Windy Gulch has a very steep gradient through
the 9700 portal area, and the bottom of the gulch is filled with talus. A small historic mine, not
associated with the Bulldog mine, is present on the opposite side of the gulch from the 9700 portal.
The lower tailings pond was inspected. There was a discussion of a plan to borrow native material from
the east side of the impoundment to cover areas of tailing surface where vegetation has not become
established. The Operator must submit a brief description of this proposed operation for Division
review prior to implementation. Based on the Operator's submittal, the Division will make a
determination as to whether a technical revision to the permit will be required, although based on the
details discussed at the site, it does not appear that a revision would be necessary.
cc: Steve Shuey, DMG
Don Holmer
Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment
WQCD-PE-B2
4300 Cherry Creek Dr. S.
Denver, CO 80222-1530
I & E Contact Address
NAME Alan Cox
OPERATOR Homestake Mining Comoanv
STREET 650 California Street
CITY/STATE/ZIP San Francisco.
