~,: <br />i-~~ <br />III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE <br />Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made <br />during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the <br />inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action. <br />Chi October 1, 2 and 4, 1996 William J. Caner trom the Division of Minerals <br />and Geology, performed a complete inspection at the Hawk's Nest Mine. <br />Sims and Markers: <br />Identification signs are in good condition and located at both entrances to the <br />permit area. <br />Roads: <br />There is only one road at the site and it is a public road that is in good condi- <br />tion at this time. <br />Hydrologic Balance: <br />• Both springs on the sides of the East Portal were flowing and appeared <br />normal. <br />• The sedimentation pond just west of the substation (below the road) was <br />dry. <br />Backfill and Grading: <br />The erosion south of the east portal, that was corrected with straw bales dur- <br />ing the last inspection, appears to be working at this time. <br />Fish and Wildlife: <br />Elk and deer are reported to be seen browsing the site most evenings and early <br />mornings. <br />Other. <br />• Control of Russian ICnapweed (Acosta diffrrsa) and Canada Thistle (Breea <br />arvense) are continuing as arranged with Adina Green of Gunnison <br />County Weed Control. <br />• Ms. Green stated that the Spring application on the A. diffrrsa, utilized <br />Transline not the expected Tordon. <br />• Transline was being used on the Fall application for both the A. diffusa <br />and B. arve»se. <br />• Transline was also the number one recommendation for these weeds by <br />George Beck Ph.D., (SU Weed Science. <br />• Ms. Green was directed to spray the A. diffrrsa and B. arvense discovered <br />during the August 27, 1996 inspection. <br />
