This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology (Division). This former mountaintop removal operation is now reclaimed and
has achieved a Phase I bond release for most areas, Ground conditions on this day were
very dry and the weather was unseasonably warm. The region in general is in dire need of
winter snow cover.
Roads
The second culvert ascending the Jeff
Canyon haul road remains partially
blocked with sediment due to summer
storm runoff- This culvert should be
cleared as soon as equipment is
returned to the site.
Hydrologic Balance
Pond 9, shown at right, located on the
north side of the disturbed area. held
water at about 1/3 capacity Pond 9a
located in Jeff Canyon below Fill 9 was
observed dry. Pond 10 at the coal
loadout held a small amount of water.
The downstream Purgatoire River
alluvial well is located adjacent to pond
10 and was found capped.
The SAE sediment treatment
measures for the large topsoil pile
footprint on the east side of the pit area
should be repaired and maintained in
accordance with the approved permit.
Silt fence and straw bales have been
compromised by wind and animals.
