III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of
observations made during the inspection. Comments also describe any
enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or evidence
supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology. This former underground site is
entirely reclaimed. Ground conditions on this day were dry and the
weather was cool and breezy. Mr A.J. Iuppa, the landowner at the site,
opened the gate allowing access to the area.
Processing Waste
The non-topsoiled refuse slope continues to show signs of erosion. Rills
and gullies vary in depth from a few inches to over one foot, especially
at the lower portions of the slope. Vegetation is sparse and consists
mostly of sprouting cicer milkvetch with a few grass interspersed. Some
rabbitbrush was noted in this area also. Recently installed contour
furrows are trapping some sediment as evidenced by small deltas of eroded
material in the bottom ofi the furrows. The 100-year ditch above the
refuse disposal area appeared in good condition. Some sloughage from
above the ditch directly behind the shop building should probably be
removed using a hand shovel.
Revegetation
Vegetation at the site is greening up due to good soil moisture and warm
spring weather. Cicer milkvetch is actively sprouting in older reclaimed
areas as well as the more recently revegetated areas. Weeds are not a
signifiicant problem at this site at the present time.
Overall, the site appeared in good condition for early spring.
