• (Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-78-162
INSPECTION DATE 01/5/99 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal inspection of the Harvey Green Pit conducted by Erica Crosby of the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology. Joe Baltazar representing Morgan County was
present curing the inspection. Weather conditions on site were cool and windy. Ground
conditions were dry.
The mine site is located 9 miles north of Snyder in Morgan County. The open pit sand and
gravel mine encompasses a permit area of 80 acres. The mine ID sign and permit boundary
markers were noted in the field. The pit area is roughly 35 acres in size and ranges in
depth between 40 to 45 feet. No mining was taking place during the inspection, but the site
is active. There are five phases of mining in the permit area. Phase I, and a portion of
Phase II and V are currently disturbed. The direction of mining is mainly toward the west.
The site has not encountered any ground water. The material is screened, stockpiled and
hauled off site. Overburden piles and topsoil piles were noted along the edge of the permit
boundary to the west. It appears that enough topsoil exists to reclaim the site to the 6"
to 9" depth of topsoil as noted in the permit.
The disturbed area of the site, mainly along the access roads and overburden piles, contains
what appears to be Canadian thistle or other form of noxious weed. The weeds will need to be
controlled this spring and summer. The Division recommends that the overburden piles in
place fo:~ longer than one year be seeded with a cover crop to prevent further weed
establisY,ment and control erosion. The operator will need to submit documentation that the
weeds were controlled in the form of receipts or a letter from the county stating that the
mine site has been managed for weeds.
