Kent Crofts representing Johnson Excavating, Inc. was
present during the inspection. Weather conditions on site were clear and warm. Ground conditions
were dry.
The Tellier Gravel Pit application is currently under review, and will be a sand and gravel operation
encompassing 25 acres. The proposed Tellier Gravel Pit is located approximately 6 miles west of
Steamboat Springs, CO, south of US Highway 40 near Routt County Road 33A. The elevation ranges from
6,568 to 6,637 feet above sea level. The anticipated use of material will be fill material for road
construction. Phase I of mining is located to the north of the natural gas pipe line and will be 7.53
acres in size. Phase II will be to the south of the gas line and will be 16.91 acres in size. The
gravel will be mined using backhoes and loaders and the gravel will be either loaded into the haul
trucks, or moved to a crushing & screening facility located on site. The gravel deposits range from
13 feet in depth to 48 feet in depth. An existing ranch road will be upgraded for a distance of 165
feet and will Cross a drainage to access the mine pit area. The anticipated postmining land use is
pastureland.
A mine sign was not posted during the time of the inspection. It appeared that a sign was posted due
to the staples remaining in the post. The Division recommends that new signs be displayed. The
permit boundary markers were noted by property fences. The permit area was inspected for features
within 200 feet. A trailer and silo structure were located within 200 feet of the southern portion
of the permit area. These two structures were not located on the exhibits submitted with the
application. The operator stated that the landowner will remove the structures prior to mining. The
operator needs to either 1) have the owner of the structures send the Division a letter stating that
the structures will be moved prior to mining or 2)include the structures on the map and provide the
Division with a notarized agreement between the operator and the owner of the structures' compensation
for any damage to the structure. If an agreement is not reached, the operator will need to provide
an engineering evaluation that demonstrates that the structure will not be damaged by mining related
activities.
The operator provided the Division with a copy of the proof of publication. It was noted in the proof
of publication that only 10 days were allowed for public comment. The operator was informed that the
public comment period is 20 days from the last date of publication, and the public notice will need
to be changed to reflect this time frame.
I & E Contact Addre ss
~ CE
NAME CD Johnson ~ BL
OPERATOR Johnson Excavation.
