III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action. .
This was a partial inspection conducted by Jce Dudash of the Colorado DMG. No one represented the operator
during the inspection. The mine site was frce of any snow and was a little wet but not muddy.
Roads
The paved haul road was in good condition. There was some debris from the adjacent hillside on the edge of the
road but the road was passable. The bridge was passable as well. The cable was strung across the road at the top
of the hill. Two "no trespassing" signs were on the cable. The gate at the facilities entrance was locked and the
"no trespassing" sign was on the gate.
Hvdrolo¢v
The Edwazds Mine portal spring treatment pond was discharging at about 20 to 30 gpm. As has always been the
case, the water was dark orange in color, which has been found to be in compliance. The treatment pond
inslopes were stable. The water level in the sediment pond was about one foot below the invert of the gated
primary dischazge pipe. The gated valve was in the closed position. The emergency spillway was functional with
the riprap in place. The pond inslopes were stable as well,
There were no problems with the up gadient alluvial well. The well cap was on, as was the cap on the down
gradient alluvial well. There was a small amount of orange colored water that had ponded near the down
gradient alluvial well, however. The azea around this well should be graded so that surface water doesn't wllect
around it.
The east side spring was flowing in its channel and through the pipe into the treatment pond. The spring water
was dazk orange in color and was coming out of the hillside about 40 feet up the slope. About I S feet below the
springs origin on the slope, the water temperature was 92 degrees F. There was no sign of the west side spring,
although as previously mentioned in this report, there was a small amount of orange colored water azound the
down gradient alluvial well.
The collection ditch leading into the sediment pond had sufficient capacity and was well vegetated.
Facilities
The abandoned mine office continues to deteriorate slowly. The building's doors were open.
Reclamation
Two large rocks have fallen from the hillside onto the flat facilities area. Each rock measures about 6 feet by 4
feet by 2 feet and both rolled a short distance onto reclaimed land. One is located near the very large rock on the
west side of the site and one is located where the reclaimed mine portal road begins at the flat facilities area
Perhaps due to the recent rains and melting snow, some of the small cracks in the backfilled portal area have
silted over and were not visible at the time of the inspection. The larger cracks are still very visible and one
appears to have deepened.
c:/word/bear3/insp0305b
