The Division of Minerals and
Geology has scheduled a hearing for reconsideration of the approved application for the
December, 1996 meeting of the Colorado Nined Land Reclamation Board, and will recommend that
the Board's previous approval of the application be rescinded.
This inspection was conducted to determine if any mining or prospecting had occurred at the
site. Virtually the entire area covered by the Stilleon Patch permit application was heavily
disturbed by historic dredge boat placerinq. French Creek rune through the site that ie
covered by dredge tailing piles. There is evidence at the Stilleon Placer that indicates
that the site has also been subject to more recent mining or prospecting activities. This
evidence includes the presence of piles of PVC pipe, separating tables, and a trommel. The
dredge pile next to the trommel appears to have been excavated relatively recently. If
gravel from the Stilleon Placer has been excavated after June 30, 1976, a Prospecting Notice
should have been filed or a Mining and Reclamation Permit obtained, but this was never done.
The Division will poll the Board at the December meeting to determine if Colorado Mining and
Smelting and the landowner of the Stilleon Patch should be cited for mining or prospecting
without a permit.
I & E Contact Address
NAME J.P.
