MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID#: M-1998-053 PAGE: 3
INSPECTION DATE: 6-1-01 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ACS
perimeter of affected lands to filter any runoff before it leaves the site.
The mining plan included with the CN-001 application includes a proposal to
install a second crossing over the Swan River at some point in the future
as mining proceeds to the south. This will necessitate the placement of
fill below the ordinary high water line of the river. The Operator
recognizes the need to obtain clearance from the Army Corps of Engineers
prior to installation of the second crossing.
The Mascot Placer site was examined to determine what impacts the proposed
mining operations may have on wildlife. Since the area to be mined is
virtually devoid of vegetation, it provides no forage and poor cover for
wildlife. The steep slopes and unsure footing on the dredge piles make it
unlikely that the area would be traversed by deer or elk. In 1993, Alex
Chappell of the Colorado Division of Wildlife inspected this location and
stated that wildlife species using the location would be "very limited
because the area was previously mined." Mr. Chappell further stated that
mining of the dredge piles will have minimal impact to wildlife.
The confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the Swan River are located
just to the east of the Mascot Placer permit and property boundary. At the
time of this inspection, the Middle Fork disappeared under the dredge piles
just upstream of this confluence. The North Fork is known to contain a
community of Greenback Cutthroat Trout, but since the entirety of the North
Fork is located upgradient of the Mascot Placer, proposed mining operations
will have no impact on this community.
cc: Carl Mount, DMG (via
email w/o photos)
Larry Brown
LF Brown & Associates Inc
3437 D % Road
Palisade, CO 81526
Dave Mehan
Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
2490 West 26th Ave. Ste. 100A
Denver, CO 80211
(mailed w/ CD of photos)
Tony Curtis
Army Corps of Engineers
Frisco Regulatory Office
P.O.
