Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology. This site was idled following the shutdown and reclamation of the Lorencito
Canyon Mine (;Y C-96-084). The weather was unseasonably mild and ground conditions
were generally dry where exposed to the sun. Patchy snow covered less exposed areas. All
areas were accessible by foot or vehicle.
Roads
The operator is reminded to maintain and blade the access road and road ditches to the
Refuse Disposal Area (RDA) prior to demobilizing equipment from the site. Roads at the
main facility were found in good condition, and if anything, were dusty due to truck traffic
(see support facilities section below).
Hydrologic Balance
Pond 7 held a small amount of water in the front of the pond. The sediment marker in this
pond should be reset to accurately depict sediment levels. The pond 7 outlet gate was found
closed. The three containments near the refuse conveyor were holding small puddles of
frozen water. Pond 8 at the RDA holding water about one foot below the invert of the
principle spillway. Repair at the emergency spillway intersection remains to be completed.
Pond 4 held water in the southeast corner. The three containments at the RDA conveyor
should also be cleaned of sediment before equipment leaves the site.
Processing Waste
The project involving regrading of
the surface of the large refuse
disposal area (RDA) north of
Highway 12 is nearly complete.
Only regrading along the front of
the exposed surface remains, and
some of this work was completed
on the 25`" Improvements to the

ensure that these improvements
function properly during a future
snowmelt or rainfall event. Work
remaining to be completed at the
RDA at this time include cleaning
