TMI topsoil evaluation, oe. 2
We compared these maps to actual field locations on Oct. 12, 2005. We also completed
representative topsoil replacement (depth) checks by digging holes on the 2005 topsoil
replacement areas on October 12, 2005. We also observed the CY 2005 topsoil removal areas,
and the ongoing topsoil stockpile relocation-redistribution effort using the ash haul end dump
trucks. All topsoil depth measurements taken of the 2005 topsoil replacement areas at the F Pit,
the Z Pit, and the former explosive area (these were the 3 areas evaluated for topsoil
replacement) were equal to and more than the required 12 inches plus or minus 2 inches (no
cropland replacement was completed or evaluated on this inspection, and this land use exists
primarily on previous reclamation areas at TML).
From our field work and observations, it appears topsoil is being handled to reduce compaction
and contamination, regraded land is ready for topsoil, and replaced topsoil is being protected
from wind and water erosion. We discussed final surface texture differences between some of the
CY 2005 topsoil replacement areas. Some areas are "rougher" that others and this practice
reduces surface water runoff and provides micro clime for plant establishment. TMI is trying to
get all CY 2005 topsoil replacement areas seeded during October 2005. We also discussed
possible seeding into snow cover on some of the CY 2005 topsoil replacement area to evaluate
the results from that different seeding practice.
Mrs. Binns and I both took GPS point readings of the topsoil depth-sampling locations at the
three replacement areas noted above. Mrs. Binns intends to document these sampling findings
and locations as data references for future use including bond release and reclamation success
findings.
Please address any questions concerning this report to Henry Austin at haustin@osmre.QOV or to
(303)844-1400 x 1466.
