Karl Koehler, representing Williams Fork Mining, was
present during the inspection. Weather conditions on site were clear and cool. Roughly 15"
of snow cover was present on site. Amine identification sign and permit boundary markers
were noted on site.
The Williams Fork Pit is located 5 miles south of Craig in Moffat County. No mining was
actively taking place during the inspection. The permit area is approximately 83.3 acres in
size. The site is divided into six mining stages. Stages 1-3 are located on the north end
of the site and Stages 4-6 are on the south end of the site. Mining started in Area 1 in
1984 and Area 3 was completed in 1996. All three stages have been reclaimed into one single
open pond. Three islands are located in the pond to benefit waterfowl habitat. The
reclamation plan will eventually return the disturbed area to wildlife habitat and
recreation. The operator is actively working with the Colorado State Parks and the Colorado
Division of Wildlife to reclaim the site to a state park and wildlife recreation area. The
Williams Fork Pit received the 1999 Department of Natural Resources - Mined Land Reclamation
Board Reclamation Award for enhancement of the Yampa River Legacy Project.
The south end of the site consists of Mining Stages 4-6. Active mining disturbance is
currently in areas 4 and 5. The site will eventually be reclaimed into a big open lake with
a waterfowl game habitat island. Topsoil and overburden piles are located on site,
stockpiled east and west of the pit. Other related disturbance noted on site consist of the
access road, gravel stockpiles, and topsoil stockpiles immediately east of the north mining
area (areas 1-3). The Division currently holds a reclamation performance bond in the amount
of $123,400.00. The bond amount appears to be adequate to reclaim the remaining disturbance
on site.
I & E Contact Address
NAME
OPERATOR
STREET
CITY/STATE/ZIP
Forrest Luke
cc
Williams Fork Mining Company
P.O.
