MINE ID ~ OR PROSPECTING ID # M-83-175
INSPECTION DATE 1-28-2000
(Page 21

INSPECTOR'S INITIALS SSS
This was a routine partial inspection conducted as part of the Division's routine monitoring program. Information was also
gathered at this inspection for use in recalculating the reclamation cast estimate. The cast estimate is recalculated to
update the costs and ensure the currs:nt financial warranty for this site is adequate to reclaim it per the approved
reclamation plan.
The mine identification sign and permit markers were in place.
Backfilling of the pits to cover the exposed groundwater is to be completed by February 2002. The backfilling is
approximately 50 percent completed at this time. Areas that have been backfilled in Pond No. 4 are exhibiting a good stand
of vegetation, some areas appear to have the characteristics of wetlands. Remaining backfilling required is estimated at:
Pond No. 4 - 2 acres @ 2 ft. depth, Pond No. 3 - 5 acres @ 3 ft. depth, Pond No. 3 (spur near wash plant) - 1 acre @ 10
ft. depth, and Pond Na. 2 - 3 acres @ 2 ft. depth. An additional foot of depth should be added to these depth to allow for
a foot of cover over the water table elevation. More depth of cover may be required by the Division of Water Resources,
to prevent loss of water through taketip by plants. This requirement will be investigated prior to calculation of the amount
of fill required to backfill the remaining pond areas.
It appears that there is enough material on site to fill Pond No. 2 to a depth of one foot above the current water elevation.
No more topsoil appears to be stockpiled on site. With approximately 10 acres remaining to be backfilled and vegetated,
the operator will need to identify a source of topsoil far use at this site. The revised reclamation bond will include costs
for importation of topsoil to reclaim these areas.
There is a fuel tank located on site that is not stored in an approved spill containment structure. This is very concerning
regarding the proximity of this location to the water table and especially exposed groundwater. The Division will require
that all fuel storage and other hazardous: materials (antifreeze, hydraulic fluid, etc.) be removed from site or stored in an
adequate spill containment facility. Because of the shallow groundwater table, this spill containment structure must be
lined with an impermeable material and must be adequate in size to contain the volume of the containers snored within it.
This problem must be corrected by Fetsruaryl8, 2000, with photo-documentation of the completed corrective action
submitted to the Division by February 18, 2000.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to:
Division of Minerals and Geology, 701 Camino Del Rio, Room 125, Durango, Colorado 81301, Attn: Steve Shuey, phone
no. 970-247-5062.
I & E Contact Address cc: Tom Gillis, DMG
^ CE
NAME Kris DeGolver ^ BL
OPERATOR Southway Construction Comoanv.
