Elk Creek Mine; pg. 3
The Elk Creek mine portal and shop complex is well maintained, orderly, and bermed to
control surface water runoff from the pad. Pond D is the only pond for the Elk Creek area
and has not discharged. Water level is 36 inches below discharge. The coal stockpile area
and adjacent powder storage areas are stable and maintained.
We next inspected the K-Mart flats storage bench and the Somerset Cemetery area. The
permittee plans to construct a permanent water treatment facility on a fill area just south
of the current water storage tank pad. This water filtration facility will remain for the
town of Somerset after mining is complete.
The East Yard sediment pond was completely dry, and the Coal Bank roadway to the four
methane-vent borehole pads (14 boreholes total) is well maintained. All four methane
vent pads are functioning well as ASCA's with berms /ditches /and straw bale
protection. The third pad inspected needs a few straw bales replaced that have been
destroyed by wildlife and/or livestock at the ditch outlet. The fourth pad has not yet been
seeded, topsoil stockpiles are stable, and ditches / berms were functional in all areas
inspected.
This concluded the inspection. Please address any questions concerning this inspection
report to Henry Austin, Senior Reclamation Specialist, at haustin@osmre.QOV or to
(303) 844-1400 x1466.
