III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during
the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the
facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection of the Coal Gulch Mine conducted by Tom Kaldenbach of the Colorado Division
of Minerals and Geology.
The permit for this mine was revoked more than 10 years ago. DMG's IML program had reclamation work done
on the site in September 1994.
Vehicle access from Hwy. 160 into the Coal Gulch site was blocked with a cable. The ground was covered with 1
foot of snow, limiting inspection.
Hvdroloeic Balance
The water level in the lower pond was a few feet below the primary spillway culvert. The pond's embankment
dam appeared in good shape. More than I cfs of water from snowmelt was flowing in the drainage extending
along the west side of the pond to the concrete culvert underneath the highway.
Slides and Damaee
No slope stability problems or erosion was evident, although snow cover limited inspection
