III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are corranents on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. This former underground mine was reclaimed and reseeded in
1996 and early 1997. The mine has achieved a Phase II bond release for the
majority of the disturbed area. Ground conditions were variable due to recent
snows but generally all areas were slightly damp and free of snow cover. The
weather was cool and breezy.
Hydrologic Balance
No signs of significant runoff from the latest storm event were noted. Soil
moisture seemed good and it is likely that most of the available moisture
infiltrated the soil profile. No ponds remain at this site. Erosion on the
reclaimed areas has not been a problem in the past nor were erosion features noted
during this inspection.
Revegetation
The reclaimed facility area and the pond 2 reclamation were traversed on foot.
Vegetation is showing the first signs of growth for the season. Abundant Scotch
thistle rosettes were observed on the reclaimed area of pond 2. Mechanical
removal of these plants prior to flowering will help control this weed species.
Overall, the site appeared in normal condition for the early spring season. No
problems were found.
3
