(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1979-148
INSPECTION DATE 7/29/03
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
This was an inspection of the Myrin Pit conducted by Erica Crosby of the Division of
Minerals and Geology. Rex Goodrich of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)
was present during the inspection.
An 110c Mining and Reclamation Permit was issued to the Colorado Division of Highways on
9/27/1979 for a total permit area of 8.86 acres. The Division approved a partial release
for 3.3 acres in 1995, and approved Amendment 01 on November 7, 1995 for an additional
2.88 acres. The current permit area is 9.87 acres. The postmining land use is rangeland.
The site is located 2 miles northwest of Toponas on State Highway 131 and H mile south of
the Highway. The pit is located on a high terrace of sand and gravel. According to. the
permit, the mining operation consists of stripping and stockpiling the soil overburden and
excavating the sand and gravel to a depth of 30 feet. The sand and gravel consists of
basalt stones and cobble. Mining was not taking place during the inspection, but a loader
was parked at the base of the mine cut face.
A mine ID sign was posed at the entrance to the site, and permit boundary markers were
depicted. The mine site is well inside the posted permit boundary markers. The road
leading to the site was in good repair, and will remain ae part of the postmining land
use. Reclamation of the site calls for all slopes to be no steeper than 3h:ly and the
floor of the pit will be graded leaving no low spots. The disturbed areas are to be
covered with 6" to 12" of soil overburden.
The Division found no evidence of topsoil or overburden piles that can be used for
reclamation of the disturbed area. The Division estimates the disturbed area to be
approximately 6 acres in size (acreage obtained from the annual reports submitted by CDOT
to the Division). This would require approximately 5,646 CY to 9,680 CY of topsoil
required for reclamation of the site. The Division is unclear as to the source of this
topsoil/overburden material, and this issue will need to be clarified by the CDOT. In
particular, please inform the Division how the operator will achieve a 6" to 12"
topsoil/overburden replacement depth on the 6-acres of disturbance. Please specify the
source and location of this material. Any changes to the mining and reclamation plan may
require a revision to the permit. CDOT will need to respond to this issue by October 1,
2003.
