III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado Division of Ivtinerals and
Geology. Also present were Dan Hernandez, Byron Walker and Bill Carter of the Division. Byron
Walker will be taking over the inspection duties at this forfeited mine site beginning on blay 1, 1999.
There was no snow on the mine site and no evidence of recent activity.
Roads
The county road was cleaz of snow. The entrance to the upper portal was blocked somewhat by the
berm. The berm should be beefed up to be more effective. The road down to the lower vent portal was
passable by foot.
Portals
The backfilled upper portal needs to have a small depression opened out in order to have positive
drainage. The backfilled AML portal appeared to have no problems. The lower vent portal has an
opening in the backfill behind the portal seal. This needs to be backfilled and the drainage channel
routed around the portal. Presently, the drainage channel passes right over the backfilled vent portal.
Crib Wall
The crib wall is still standing. It does not appear that any wooden members of the crib wall have fallen
down.
Hydroloev
There was no water in the sedimentation pond. The embankment appeared to be stable and the
spillways were functional, although a tree.was leaning on top of the primary dischazge tube.
The upper bench diversion ditch was functional, except near the entrance to the mine site. Where the
ditch is no longer functional, the runoff would travel offsite away from the mine site.
Facilities
There was a considerable amount of waste at the mine site, especially at the lower bench area. This
waste should be removed. Most of the waste is mine equipment and debris. There is one 30 gallon
barrel at the lower bench area that is full and needs to be tested for hazardous waste and then removed.
c:\ms97\sunl fight\i nsp0499
