(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1982-141
INSPECTION DATE: 6/29/05
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS GRM
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring program established by the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. The Juniper Quarry currently has an amendment under review by DMG staff. Since the sites
are not contiguous, staff is inspected the current activities separately for clarity. Mr. Don Steele and Mr. Bennett
Steele, representatives for Moffat Limestone accompanied the inspector on this inspection.
The Juniper Quarry is located southeast of Maybell, Colorado. The 112c limestone quarry supplies high-grade
limestone products to coal power plants and lower grades for other purposes. The site is active with approximately
16 acres disturbed and approximately 2 under reclamation.
The proper sign is noted at the entrance to the site. Permit boundaries are t-posts and fence lines for the most part.
Total permitted acreage is currently 63 acres and disturbances are well within this area.
Fuel is supplied by mobile equipment so no tanks were observed on site. There were however some 55-gallon oil
drums noted in a storage azea, that were dented and some lying on their sides. The potential for residue leakage is
significant and the operator should take steps to keep the barrels in a beamed area to prevent barrel damage and
spills. The improper storage of oil containers is currently being listed as an issue of concern and will be monitored.
If the barrels are observed again not properly stored the issue will be changed to a problem with corrective actions
necessary.
As noted above, there aze approximately 2 acres under reclamation. Grasses are doing very well with an estimated
cover of azound 60%. Crested wheatgrass, a brome and some rabbit brush were noted as well as some annual
grasses. There is some thistle in the area, however the operator does supply certified weed free materials and has an
aggressive weed control plan. Some thistle plants were observed in distress from spraying.
Highwall vary in heights from 10 to 40 feet. There was a crusher actively producing stockpiles and support
equipment working as well.
Some mining debris is noted azound the site that the Division will have to bond for cleanup. Some old dozer tracks,
screening and crusher parts, etc. were noted.
Stormwater and erosion control measures appear to be working as designed. No off-site damage or erosion issues
were observed.
Overall, given the nature of the mining, the site is clean and orderly. No problems or issues are noted.
The site is due for a bond calculation update; which will be done at the same time as the amendment calculations.
