(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1979-097
INSPECTION DATE 03/28/06 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
OB38RVATION3
This was a follow-up inspection from the Division's inspection of March 7, 2006 of the East
Rigden Pit, File No. M-1979-097 conducted by Erica Crosby of the Colorado Division of
Minerals & Geology. Eric Reckentine, Tim Nieson and Gary Knox of Lafarge were present during
the inspection.
Lafarge requested the inspection in order to demonstrate compliance with the approved
reclamation plan regarding armoring of the lateral berm that separates the East Rigden Pit
from the adjacent Port of Entry (POE) Pit operated by Lafarge (Permit M-1982-182).
The armoring and stabilization plan of the lateral berm was approved under Technical
Revision 03 (TR-03). The plan calls for a rock-armored channel to safely pass water
between the two pits. The filter material is to consist of 8" type 2 bedding followed by
2' type M riprap (dso = 9") and 1' mixed soil and rip rap on top (dso = 6").
Lafarge began work on the armoring and stabilization plan after the Divisions inspection
of 3/7/06 and notice of possible violation of C.R.S. 34-32.5-116(1) for failure to follow
the approved reclamation plan. Lafarge graded the berm between the two pits and has
installed a majority of the rock armoring. Trenches were cut on the downslope of both
pits, and concrete was placed in the channel location. The concrete riprap exceeds the
design standards in terms of size. In addition, the rock is very angular and appears to
be keyed in well to the surrounding area. Another layer of rock is required on the toe of
the channel where it has been keyed in place.
Lafarge has completed most of the work associated with the channel. However, some
additional armoring is needed as well as final grading of the site. The operator will
need to complete the armoring by April 1, 2006 as previously noted in the Division's
inspection report and submit photographs of the completed armoring by May 1, 2006.
I & B Contact Addreae
j' CE
NAME Eric Reckentine j" BL
OPERATOR Lafarge West, Inc. j' FS
STREET 1800 N.
