1
I ,
III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a complete inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. This former, contour strip operation is bond revoked. Inspection
frequency is quarterly, with one complete inspection each year. Ground conditions on
this day were extremely dry and the weather was hot.
Roads
The inclined portion of road leading back to the south into section 22 is still in good
condition. Drainage control work along this portion seems to function well. Water
bars on the road along the contour strip reclaimed area appear to function adequately.
Some ponding of water occurs on the inside of the road at the last two water bars on
the south end.
Hydrologic Balance
All sediment ponds were dry or held a very small amount of water. Sediment ponds 15-
P2, 22-P5, and 22-P6 all held very small pools of water due to prevailing dry
conditions. The ditch directing runoff from north around the reclaimed area of former
pond 15-P1 was found in good condition and showed no signs of any significant
downcutting or erosion..
Revegetation
The reclaimed area vegetation appeared in good condition. Vegetative cover can be
rated as good in most areas and shrubs are abundant, especially in the Section 22
reclaimed area. Seeded species are becoming well established on the reclaimed area of
former sediment pond 15-P10. Few weeds exist on this area and those encountered were
mechanically removed. This area appears to have been heavily grazed in the recent past.
The reclaimed area of former sediment pond 15-P1 was inspected for evidence of
sprouting of the seeded species. Cockleburrs infest this area and no evidence of any
desirable species was noted. Revegetation efforts appear to be a total failure in this
area.
Page 3
