•
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #
INSPECTION DATE 08-20-98
(Page 2) •
M-77-141
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
This was an inspection of the Lyons Quarry conducted by Erica Crosby of the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. Norm Roche of Golden's Andesite Mining Company and Danna Brand of Rocky
Mountain Consultants, Inc. were present during the inspection. Wea[her conditions on site were clear
and warm. Ground conditions were dry. There were no previous inspections of the site that could be
located in the files.
The Lyons Quarry is a 112 operation, permitted to affect 54 acres. The total permit area is 320 acres.
The mine is located in northwestern Boulder County, approximately three miles southwest of Lyons, CO.
The mine is adjacent to South St. Vrain Creek. Mining is mainly taking place south of the river, and
a small portion will take place north of the river. The aggregate being mined is quartz monzonite
at an estimated yearly recoverable yield of 400,000 tons. The mining area is in four distinct areas
which range from 7 to 13 acres in size. Area 4, north of South St. Vrain Creek, has not been mined
to date. She area has been mined since 1977.
The mine consists of a highwall roughly 160 high. The material is blasted and removed with loaders.
Dozers were actively moving material during the inspection. An office and shop facility were noted
as well as the plant site. Topsoil and overburden piles were noted. The topsoil piles contained
Canadian thistle and russian thistle that need to be controlled. The permit states that weeds will
be mowed to eliminate competition of the seeded species. Weeds were also noted in a small reclaimed
area above the pit. The operator needs to vegetate the topsoil piles and address the weed problem
in accordance with the approved weed management plan. Evidence of weed control needs to be submitted
to the Division within 60 days of receipt of this report. Proof of weed control can be in the form
of receipts or photographs. Permit boundary markers could not be located in the field. The operator
needs to install the boundary markers, and provide the Division with photographs within 60 days of
receipt of this report.
The reclamation plan map shows that a majority of the highwall will remain in place due to the stable
nature of the quartz monzonite (roughly 120 feet). The upper 40 feet, which is a sedimentary cap-
rock, will be reclaimed to a 2h:ly slope. The lower portion of the mining operation will be a 2$
grade towards the St. Vrain Creek. The Division currently holds a bond in the amount of $142,800.00.
The Division reevaluated the amount of required bond based on the actual disturbance and the
reclamation requirements noted in the permit. The bond was estimated to reclaim the upper 40 feet
of highwall to a 2:1 slope, structural demolition of the shop and office buildings, ripping the
facility area and access roads, topsoil replacement to a depth of 12", revegetation and
mobilization/demobilization of equipment. The Division's estimate totals $236,219.00. A formal
letter, with a copy of the bond estimate will be forwarded to the operator.
I & E Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Mr, Norm Roche ^ BL
OPERATOR Golden's Andesite Mining Co. ^ FS
STREET 21 South Sunset Street ^ HW
CITY/STATE/ZIP Longmont.
