III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection of the Coal Gulch Mine for the month of October, 1996.
The site is dry and appears to be stable. None of the seeps are flowing.
Coal gulch is dry. Fire Hawk Contractors, Inc. hit a buried water line while excavating a small
pit near the Coal Gulch Mine entrance gate, on Fire Hawk's property. The line drains water at
an estimated rate of 20 gpm. The water has a distinct hydrogen sulfide smell and is presumed
to originate within the old Victory No. 3 pre-law mine. Currently the flow sinks into the ground
before leaving the Fire Hawk property. Fire Hawk intends to bury the pipe and let it discharge to
the groundwater system, as it appears to have been doing up to the time it was uncovered.
