(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: m-1984-108
INSPECTION DATE: 8/3/04 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS GRM
This inspection was conducted as.part of the normal monitoring program established by the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. The Olathe Pit is a 110c permitted site located south of Olathe, Colorado on County Road
59.00. Judy DeVincentis, representative for Western Gravel was present for the inspection.
The mine identification sign and affected area boundary markers are in place and in compliance with Rule 3.1.12.
The sign is located at the main entrance to the permit azea. The permit is in•egulaz shaped with 2 square pazcels
being connected by a 24' haul road. Some t-post were noted and the boundaries were easily distinguishable.
The north pit area is in full reclamation. Slopes appear to be 3:1 and 5:1 in one area. Cattails and willows were
noted along the banks. (Photos 1,2) Additionally, grasses along the banks were noted which included wheatgrasses,
Indian rice grass and bromes. Density and diversity of the vegetation is very good. Estimated ground cover in this
azea is 80%. Several bass and other fish were observed in the pond. The only issue is a heavy infestation of
knapweed in the azea along the southem permit boundary of the north section. The operator has been aggressive in
treating the weeds, but infestations outside the permit boundary make eradication very difficult. Evidence of the
treatment program is dead and stressed knapweed plants amongst health new recruits. (Photo 3) It would be in the
operator's best interest to hit the knapweed very hard with herbicides in the fall and spring, then seek a release of
this azea from the permit azea as soon thereafter as possible. Staff advises that it maybe worth contacting the
landowner to discuss a joint program for fighting the infestation outside the boundaries.
The southern pit is still currently in use. Slopes in this azea are primarily 1:1 as no reclamation has been initiated.
(Photo 4) Water comes up to approximately 3 feet of the surrounding grade within the pit and maybe 15 feet deep at
its highest point. Within this area, there are also knapweed infestations that are coming in from outside the permit
boundaries. No equipment was noted at the site at this time, but tracks showed recent activities of some kind.
No erosion, sedimentation or storm water issues were noted. All disturbances appear to be within the approved
permit boundaries.
No issues aze noted at this time. The current bond is set at $8,167.00, which was recalculated in December of 1999.
Staff will review the bond within the next 30 days and take into account the area already reclaimed and current
conditions of the disturbed areas.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Russ Means at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Grand Junction
Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone no. 970-241-1117.
I & E Contact Address cc:
^ CE
NAME: Judv DeVincentis ^ BL
OPERATOR: Western Gravel.
