'r
B. The Stockpile Area
1. The stockpile area is predominantly vacant of stockpiles over
the larger portion of the area available for stockpiles. The vacant areas
are compacted as a result of access and turn around for heavy equipment
used to remove and haul the stockpiles. Revegetation has not occurred
in this area.
2. Existing stockpiles occur on the eastern portion of the stock-
pile area. The volume and height of the stockpiles is substantial.
With regard to landowners and occupants of homesites located on the
western boundary of the permit area, concerns were expressed that
the stockpiles, as they presently occur, pose problems regarding:
a. visual obstruction to undisturbed lands to the east from
the vantage point of residents located on the western boundary of
the Turnpike Pit;
b. particle blowing; and,
C. general safety to children who might trespass on the steeper,
more unstable faces of the stockpiles.
C. The Flood Control Berm
1. The flood control berm is in place and runs across the north
boundary of the Turnpike Pit and across the eastern portion of the
proposed Deepe Farm Pit. The berm is intended to reduce the historic
100-year flood plain of South Boulder Creek within the two mining areas.
2. Reclamation efforts at the berm are intensive and have resulted
in a moderate cover of vegetation along the berm slopes. The seed
mixture utilized was not noted at the time of this inspection. willow
and cottonwood plantings have occurred. However, pocket gopher damage
has destroyed the roots of several plantings. A crew of one was main-
taining the area at the time of inspection. This area is irrigated
by sprinkler.
D. Miscellaneous Disturbances i
1. Barren, unvegetated areas, with exposed shale (reduced grey material) ,
and invasion of annuals (weeds) in localized areas, occur on the eastern
portion of the Turnpike area.
2. Gravelly surface areas of poor vegetation occur on the eastern
portion of the site of the permit area.
3. Topsoil stockpiles were not observed at the time of the inspection,
but may be present.
