(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR INSPECTION DATE: INSPECTOR'S
PROSPECTING ID #: INITIALS:
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring and enforcement inspection process that the
Division Reclamation Mining & Safety (Division) carries out on all permitted mines in Colorado at least once
every four years. Chris Rowe from the Division carried out the inspection. There was not a Kit Carson County
representative present. The mine is located 7 miles southwest of Flagler. This is a 9.7 acre mine site. The last
inspection of this site was on 4/17/2003, and no problems were cited.
This site appears to have some pre-permit mining activity, with some mining having occurred along the western
side of the permit boundary.
The site is accessed off a 0.2 mile long un-improved dirt track.
The active portion of the mine site is a trench with a slope along the long sides of approximately 4:1 slopes.
There is some disturbance east of the trench as well. The trench is approximately 20 feet deep, and cover
approximately 2 acres . There has been some recent erosion along the trench slopes and there was standing
water in the bottom of the trench. Some erosion of the eastern part of the mine permit ran toward a dry gully.
The gully is off the permit boundary and appears to have recently experienced some significant down-cutting. It
is not clear whether any of the down-cutting was a result of mining activity. A dense patch of grass appears to
have stopped sediment from running off the mine site and into the gully. Sediment erosion controls may be
needed above the gully if any further erosion is generated in off this portion of the mine. There appears to be
adequate topsoil for reclamation of the site.
No problems were noted.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
OPERATOR: Kit Carson County
STREET: P.O. bax 160
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Burlington, Colorado 80807
cc:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers CO Hazardous Materials and Waste Division
U.S. Bureau of Land Management CO State Engineers Office
U.S. Forest Service CO Water Quality Control Division
CO Department of Transportation OTHER:
