IPege 21
MINE ID q OR PROSPECTING ID #
INSPECTION DATE 7129197
M-97-053
OBSERVATIONS
•
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS WHE
This pre-operations inspection of the Clifton Water Gravel Pit was conducted by Wally Erickson
from the DMG Durango office. Ed Settle, Grand Junction Pipe & Supply, accompanied the DMG
inspector throughout the inspection. The proposed aggregate site is located approximately 3.5
miles SW of Palisade, on the NW side of the Colorado River main channel. Submitted 112c
application is for 13.4 acres affected area.
Mining operations had not commenced. North boundary is delineated by access road and
abandoned fence line. Operator indicated that Cottonwood trees, established along the north
boundary would not be removed by mining operations. East boundary was not delineated by
markers or monuments. West boundary is delineated by the present location of the NW bank of
the Colorado River. South boundary was not delineated by markers but parallels an existing access
road. Overhead utility line and buried water supply line was located near the south boundary. Prior
to commencement of mining operations, the operator is required to post mine identification sign
and affected area perimeter markers. Details of signs and markers are defined in Rule 3.1.12.
Permit area is partially within the floodplain for the Colorado River. Portions of the permit area had
previously been utilized for livestock grazing and materials/equipment storage. Vegetative cover
appeared typical for floodplain areas. Knapweed was established in an area, 20'x 20', along the
SE boundary of the proposed permit area. Knapweed is a vigorously competitive noxious weed
which reproduces by seeds and rhizomes. Once established, knapweed is extremely difficult to
control or eradicate. Operator is required to control noxious weeds by Rule 3.1.1016-~. A list of
noxious and problem weeds and control techniques for these species can be obtained from the
County Extension Service, the County Weed Control District Office, or the local office of the Soil
Conservation Service.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Edward Settle
OPERATOR Grand Junction Pioe & Suooly
STREET P.O.
