I inspected this feature on 16 September and
took some picutres (attached). In addition to the one seen by Harry, a found a smaller depression
some 30 yards to the west (down dip but at about the same elevation). These depressions may be
subsidence over the mined coal seam. This is not the fan shaft reported earlier, but is located
about half way between the fan shaft and the portals. I have attached a location map.
Assessment: They collect surface runoff of the area and this water likely enters the mined out
areas (no outlet from the depressions). I saw no opening. I did not check the s[ability of the basin
bottoms. Perhaps fencing and warning signs are warranted. Please see me if you have any
questions.
Cc: Dan Hernandez
David Betry
Files: C-81-046
C:\W PDOCS\Support\iomAMLsubsidence.046.doc
