ul. cot>rwll~rrs - colutrw-tacl: Sou~6'~d ~'g~ °~`l
gfoza /6M~o0
Below ore comments on fhe Inspedlon. The ommerrts include dlseustion of observalbns
made dutrrg the Inspecflon. Cammerris otw desarllse arty ertorcemenl actions taken
dudrrp the IrrspeeMon and the fads ar evidence supporNnp the enfareemerrt adbn.
This was a partial inspecflon of the Southfield Mine conducted by Jim Stark of CDMG.
Mike Boulay of CDMG and AI Weaver of EFCl,accompanied me. The mine was
actively producing and hauling coal. The we'~er was cool and clear and there
was about six inches of snow on the ground.
Both the Access road and haul road to the refuse pile were to good condition. They
were wet from the melting snow and the water appeared to be going Into the
roadside ditches. There was no visible damage to the roads from this run-off.
Pond 1 was in good shape. The water level was at the bottom of the discharge pipe.
Pond 5 was also in good condition. The water level in pond 5 was just below the
bottom of the discharge pipe. The weather made it impossible to see ponds 3 and 4.
Pond 4 was dry last month so there should be no problems with its ability to treat
water when the snow melts.
The refuse that has been "piling-up" on the active part of the refuse pile has been
spread and compacted. There was only a small amount of water on the pile,
despite the melting snow (most was observed to be running into the ditchj. There
was a motor grader that was stuck in part of the ditch but it did not appear as
though it would cause a problem with the ditch's ability to handle water.
There was about six Inches of snow covering the ground so It was not possible to
observe the part of the refuse pile that was recently seeded or the loadout. These
two areas should, however, benefit from the moisture.
