LAFARGE
NORTH AMERICA 1/
Construction Materials
March 29, 2004 /
Mc Carl Mount
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
RECEIVED
MAR 2 9 2004 '~
Division of Minerals & CeolopY
RE: Bunn Ranch Pit, Permit No. M-1980-131 -Work Schedule Extension
Dear Mr. Mount:
Per our approved Technical Revision for the Bunn Ranch Pit, Lafarge was to have completed the
inlet and outlet structures on or before March 31, 2004. As of this date, the inlet structure has
been completed per the design submitted. However, the outlet structure will not be completed
prior to Mazch 31, 2004. There are two main reasons for not completing the structure, they are:
1) The unusually warm spring has resulted in conditions that have precluded Lafarge
from working on the structure without incurring additional damage to the pit berms and
surrounding vegetation. It has only been the last couple of weeks that have afforded dry
enough conditions to work on the structures. in this time, Lafarge has completed the inlet
structure and a portion of the outlet structure.
2) The pit supplying the riprap closed in December before we could haul all of the
necessary riprap to armor both structures. The riprap pit has re-opened for this year, but
the rising Yampa River level has precluded us from hauling more riprap. As soon as the
river level allows, we will haul in and place the remaining riprap for the completion of
the structure. However, the exact timing of proper river conditions for haulage is difficult
to predict.
Lafarge is committed to completing the approved work in as timely a manner as possible.
However, as explained above, our spring weather and the closure of the riprap source has
precluded meeting the March 31, 2004 deadline. Therefore, Lafarge is requesting an
extension to not later than November 30, 2004 to complete this work.
