The
permitted cattle are in the grazing allotment now, so the time was right for the inspection.
The findings of the inspection were that atwo-wire temporary electric fence had been
constn~cted, but had failed to the point that the area inside of the enclosure had been grazed
heavier than the outside. Upon further discussion with Mrs. Stone he found that the cattle had
apparently entered the enclosure over the weekend and when the Stone's arrived Monday
morning, some were trapped inside the electric fence enclosure. Clyde recommended that they
use steel T-posts for the comers, re-string the wire, and inspect the fence daily while the cattle
are in the allotment.
Clyde returned on December 3, 1999 to inspect the fence again. He found that no cattle were in
[he enclosure azound the reclaimed area and the fence was up in good order. When he checked
the fence for charge, it was running around 2000 to 3000 volts -sufficient to turn cattle.
Montezuma County is currently reshaping their temporary materials and equipment storage right-
of-way at the gravel pit and should be completing the topsoil placement and re-seeding soon.
We will continue to monitor the reclamation at the Stone Gravel Pit.
Sincerely,
Kent Hoffman
Associate Field Office Manager
PUBLIC LANDS CENTER
15 Burnett Court
DURANGO, CO 81301
(970) 247-4874
TTY (970) 385-1257

USDA Forest Service
San Juan-Rio Grande
NF
FAX (9701 385-1243
To: BLM:
Stone Gravel Pit
Received
cc: Dazen Stone
