(Page 2)
MINE ID ~ OR PROSPECTING ID ~ M-78-305
INSPECTION DATE 07/07/95 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS RCO
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was performed by the Division ae part of its monitoring of 110 permits. The
operator was contacted about the inspection, and a time was arranged to meet at the site.
The permit area is on a steep hillside at the edge of Curecanti National Rec Area, adjacent
to Hwy 50 west of Gunnison. At the entrance to the permit area, a sign identifying this site
as having a MLRB permit was observed. A short tour around the permit area with the operator
allowed for observation of all the markers around this irregularly-shaped permit area. The
site is currently being operated.
operations have produced steep elopes on the permit area. At times it appears that
controlling surface runoff may be difficult. The stormwater runoff structures were observed
with the operator. One of them, a small pond area at the base of the cottonwood near the
office and west of the ecalehouse, was partially covered or removed. The party currently
excavating in the pit, under an agreement with the operator, had disturbed it to allow their
operation this season. The operator stated that at the end of their work this season, it
would be reconstructed. Another structure, along the curved road at the south edge of the
pit, south of the ecalehouse, has had its functional capacity significantly reduced by
sedimentation. This speaks well for the functioning of the structure, but it must be
recognized that ongoing maintenance is required. These structures should be remade or
maintained as soon as possible this season. At this point neither of the topics of
"erosion/sedimentation" or "atormwater plan" are noted ae problems. If upkeep of these
structures is not made, and sediment loads are not controlled, the possibility exists for
sedimentation affecting areas outside the permit, a possible violation. All excavation and
significant maintenance work on structures such as these, may be noted in the annual report,
which ie next due in February 1996.
The financial warranty was recently recalculated, and was not reviewed at this time.
The operation is comforming to its plan, and no reclamation activities are being carried out
now.
There were no problems observed at the Bite, nor other items discussed with the operator.
I & E Contact Address cc: Jim Stevens/DMG
^ CE
NAME Warren Wilcox ^ BL
OPERATOR Gunnison Gravel ^ FS
STREET PO Box 42 ^ HW
CITY/STATE/ZIP Gunnison CO 81230 ^ HMWMD (CH)
^ SE
^ WQCD (CH)
^ OTHER
