(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: ~-~ 9z9-(LS
INSPECTION DATE: rll ~z 9nne INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: ~1~L
OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal monitoring inspection conducted by Tony Waldron of DMG along with Steve O'Brien
representing Lakewood Brick and Tile. The site is located on the Rocky Flats piedmont and is just off of Hwy 93
and north of the main guard shack for the Rocky Flats Plant. The pits are situated on a level portion of the
piedmont and no major drainages run through the area. However, there is a small irrigation right-of-way
running from east to west through the permit area.
This mining site is rather unique in that it was initially a clay mining operation, however, there is a deposit of sand
and gravel overburden that varies in thickness from several feet thick above the commercial clay deposit to 50
feet or more as you move to the east. The clay mine began in the southwest corner of the permit area and
basically began moving north following the old hogback that is buried under a thin cover of sand and gravel.
As the clay was mined it was determined that this was a viable deposit of sand and gravel, especially as you
move east, and asub-contractor was brought in to conduct the sand and gravel mining. The gravel deposit is
embedded into a matrix of silt and clay that was present during the original event that formed the piedmont.
The deposit contains this silt and clay throughout the entire profile and presents a serious problem during
processing.
Currently the clay mine is in the north central part of the permit area and the sand and gravel operation is in
the south central to southeast part of this permit area. Recently, the parcel straight east of this site obtained
their permit with the intention of having the gravel contractor conduct mining in that area as well. The gravel
operation is presently in the process of constructing a wash plant to further process primary screened materials
to remove the clay which is difficult to remove with primary screening. This plant is being constructed west of
the main gravel pit. The gravel operation will now continue to move east and north instead of following the
clay mine. Very little reclamation has occurred in the gravel operation and it may have to get a little larger
before they can begin to reclaim contemporaneously.
The clay portion of the operation has a fairly sizeable pit opened up and was actively mining and reclaiming
during this inspection. There are several different clay deposits that are being mined ai this site. These are
mined and further processed to remove any large rocks. The material is then placed in various stockpiles
around the site and hauled to the main brick making plant throughout the year depending on color and
demand. Although there is a sizeable pit opened up for the clay mining, the pit is being contemporaneously
backfilled as mining progresses.
One of the waste products from the gravel operation is apparently suitable for the manufacture of adobe
bricks and a small brick making operation has set up shop just north of the gravel operation and east of the
clay pit. This small staging area will be for the manufacture of bricks only and no mining will occur in this area
as the result of this activity.
The permit boundaries were clearly marked and all operations are occurring well within the approved permit
boundaries. There was a mine identification sign posted at the entrance to the mine site. The bond was
recalculated in 2000 and was raised from $40,000.00 to $84,200.00 at that time. This amount of disturbance has
remained relatively stable since then and this amount is still sufficient to reclaim the site. No problems were
observed and this concluded the inspection.
I & E Contact Address
cc.
