The site is located approximately 1
mile north of Elbert, Colorado and just west of Elbert County Road 25-41. The pit is situated
into a sloping upland hillside with mining progressing to the south towards the ridgetop.
The permit boundary was clearly marked with painted t-posts and there was a mine
identification sign posted at the entrance to the site. The mineable reserve at this site
is nearly exhausted and some reclamation has already commenced on the northwest boundary.
The reclaimed area vegetation resembles the approved seed mix and appears to be doing fairly
well. The pit has advanced to the southwest and there is a sizeable highwall which will
need to be backfilled or regraded before it reaches the permit boundary. There is a large
material stockpile along the southeastern side of the pit which is nearly spilling over the
permit boundary. In addition, there is a small yard area just east of the permit line which
contains several pieces of construction equipment such as a tanker trailer, old tanks,
equipment blades and buckets, etc. The operator indicated that this equipment has been stored
there for a number of years and may even be equipment that was left over from the previous
operator. This equipment should be removed or placed inside the approved permit area and the
area where it was sitting will need to be ripped and seeded with the approved seed mix.
There is also a small two-track road that traverses this area and leads up to the pit from
the east side that will need to be ripped and seeded at the same time'. These are not within
the approved affected area but are also not significant disturbances such that a possible
violation would be issued. However, the areas do need to be reclaimed as soon as possible.
This is cited as a problem on page three of this report along with the appropriate corrective
actions.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Curt Farmer
OPERATOR Elbert County
STREET P.O.
