i
III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
On February 18, 1997, William J. Carter from the Division of Minerals and Geology performed a
complete inspection at the Hawk's Nest Mine. The weather was cloudy and light snow was falling
during part of the inspection.
Roads:
The old State highway is in good condition except for some minor rock falls at the western end of
the mine property.
Hydrologic Balance:
• The seep at the west side of the east portal is discharging and running across the road
where some frost heaving is taking place.
• The sedimentation pond on the western portion of the property is again dry except for the
snow that has fallen into the pond.
• The bales of straw placed in the gullies of the east portal area, south of the highway are
continuing to function. There did not appear to be any more erosion at this time.
Backfill and Grading;
The old portal areas were not snow covered and did not show any signs of settling, or slippage at
this time.
Fish and Wildlife:
Two elk were observed feeding on the mine site. At both the east and west portal areas a great
deal of elk droppings and tracks were observed along with evidence of heavy grazing.
Revegetation:
Spring growth is starting to show on the steeper south facing slopes of both portal locations.
