(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1977-425
INSPECTION DATE 6/27/04
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
This was an inspection of the Strang Gravel Pit conducted by Erica Crosby of the Division
of Minerals and Geology. Dale Miller and Charlie Park were present during the inspection.
An 112c Mining and Reclamation Permit was issued to Larimer County on April 23, 1981 for a
total permit area of 108 acres. The site ie located 3 miles south of Fort Collins in
Larimer County, Colorado. The postmining land use is recreation.
A mine identification sign was posted at the entrance to the site. No mining was taking
place during the inspection. The site consists of an active pit area and a series of
reclaimed ponds (labeled A through I). The area is mined in the northwest direction.
Ponds A and B have been mined and reclaimed into groundwater lakes. Pond slopes are well
vegetated. Mine dewatering water discharges to Pond B or to Pond A. Water levels are
kept high in these ponds due to the shallow wells at the residential development to the
south, Safety berms have been constructed around the ponds where roads are present. The
operator will need to reduce the elope of the berms upon final reclamation of the site.
Pond C is currently being mined on the northwest end. Topsoil piles were noted, but a
portion of that material will be used for road base material. A pipe was installed
adjacent to the neighbor to the west (Bob Shields) to discharge wastewater from the field.
The operator stated that the west slopes of Pond C will be reclaimed this year.
Pond D has been partially reclaimed. The pit continues to be dewatered. Some water was
noted in the pit due to a broken pump. Pipes have been constructed throughout the ponds
for dewatering purposes. If any pipes are retained for reclamation of the ponds, it will
need to be addressed as a revision to the permit.
No problems were noted during this inspection.
I & 8 Contact Address
^ CE
NAME Mr. Dale Miller ^ BL
OPERATOR Larimer County ^ FS
STREET P.O.
