III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments inGude discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the Inspection and the (acts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of CDMG. This former underground
mine is reclaimed. Remaining buildings and structures are approved to remain as permanent
structures. Ground conditions on this day were dry and the weather was cool and overcast.
Hydrologic Balance
The single sediment pond at the site was observed. Debris some 5 feet above the principal drop-
inlet riser indicated a recent storm event of significant size. Storm flow had knocked over the trash
rack but the drop inlet was not plugged. Water level was below the top of the drop inlet indicating
full dewatering of the storm event runoff. The event likely occurred on July 29. 2002 in the early
afternoon during a regional thunderstorm. Debris in the armored section of Refuse Ditch No. 1
indicated storm flow runoff at full capacity. Refuse Ditch No. 2 had silted in along its upper reach
and some small rills have developed leading into the sediment pond. Repair of these rills should
be included with other maintenance work this summer.
Contour furrows on the reclaimed refuse slope are generally full of sediment. Rills and gullies are
now forming again and cutting through the deposited material.
