(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1977-392
INSPECTION DATE 04/0412007
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS DEG
This inspection of Permit Number M-1977-392 (Dawson Mine) was conducted by Deb E. Gbnima of the DRMS and was
prompted by a 16.25-acre reduction request. Albert Templeton, Acme Brick representative was present during this inspection.
The pit is located approximately 8 miles east of Kiowa, CO and currently consists of approximately 42.35 acres, the majority of
which are being actively mined.
The majority of the site remains active, with the exception of the 16.25 acre portion of the site to the northeast. On this section
of the site, the grading, topsoil replacement, and seeding over most of the site appear to have been done properly. However, it
appears that this portion of the site requires at least one additional growing season in order for adequate vegetative cover to
establish. Approximately 50% of this portion of the site still remains low in vegetative cover. This portion of the site was initially
seeded for reclamation in 2003, and over the three years that followed the initial seeding there were evident attempts to
encourage vegetative establishment such as the implementation of a knapweed weed control and management plan, and spot
re-seeding. As a result of the weed management and control plan there was no evidence, during this inspection, of a
reemergence of knapweed. At the time of this inspection no rosettes were noted and onl y older desiccated husks from previous
years were observed. Due to the apparent success of this weed management and control plan, the operator is strongly
encouraged to continue weed control and management on this site.
However, at this time, the Division does not believe that sufficient time has passed to allow for adequate vegetative cover to
establish. The operator should wait at least one additional growing season for vegetation to become established prior to
submitting another acreage reduction request for this portion of the site.
All other activities and completed work at the time of inspection appeared to follow the guidelines and regulations set forth by
the state and in the mining and reclamation plans for the pit. At the time of this inspection there appeared to be no long-term
(greater than 72 hours) water retention. As a final note for future reference, this site is correctly positioned in the DRMS online
GIS.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Deb E. Gbnima at the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety,
Denver Office, 1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, Colorado 80203, phone number 303-866-4179.
I & E Contact Address cc:
^ CE
NAME Albert Templeton ^ BL
OPERATOR Acme Brick/The Denver Brick Comoanv ^ FS
STREET 401 Prairie Hawk Drive ^ Hyv
CITY/STATEIZIP Castle Rock.
