(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1987-127
INSPECTION DATE 9/28/04 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS ESC
a
OBSERVATIONS
This was an inspection of the Butala Pit conducted by Erica Crosby and Carl Mount of the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology. Tom Eve representing Butala Construction Co. was
present during the inspection. The site is located 20 miles west of Salida in Chaffee
County, Colorado.
The Butala Pit is a 110c marble operation, permitted for 6 acres. The permit was issued on
May 11, 1988. The Division holds a reclamation bond in the amount of $43,617.00. The
approved postmining land use is wildlife habitat.
A mine identification sign and boundary markers were observed at the site. The Butala pit is
an active marble operation located at an elevation of 11,600 feet. The marble layer is
approximately 80 feet thick and dips at 60°. The quarry face is approximately 65 feet high._
The site was last mined 3 years ago, but stockpiled material was hauled out from the site
this year. The operator stated that they plan to blast at the quarry next year. The upper
limits of the highwall are close to the permit boundary markers. The operator will need to
ensure that additional blasting and quarrying remain within the permitted boundaries.
Topsoil on site is limited due to the talus rock overburden. A small pile has been
stockpiled for future use. The permit states that new topsoil will be transported to the
site and placed upon the regarded/reshaped overburden sites at the time of reclamation.
The operator requested a copy of a Butala Pit map in the DMG file. The map is attached to
this inspection report.
i & 8 Contact Addreea
^ CE
NAME Frank Butala ^ BL
OPERATOR Butala Construction Co. ^ FS
STREET P.O.
