III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
General Comments
This was a partial site inspection of the McClane Canyon Mine, conducted by Dan Mathews of the DMG
Grand Junction Field Office. I was accompanied by Walter Whitledge of CAM. Weather was clear, warm
and humid. There had been flooding in the adjacent Munger Canyon watershed on July 25 that impacted
certain permitted structures in the Munger Canyon permit area. The purpose of this inspection was to
check drainage and sediment control structures in the McClane Permit area, to determine if flooding had
impacted the McClane watershed as well.
Mr. Whitledge had reported that the brunt of the storm had apparently bypassed the McClane watershed,
and this appeared to have been the case. McClane Creek in the permit area did not show indications of
high flow. Drainage control structures appeared to be generally in good condition. The sediment pond
water level was just below the primary discharge level, and had not discharged. Maintenance is
warranted to clear off the inlet end of Culvert "F", above the shop building in the mine bench area where
there had been some sediment deposition, and well as the office area SAE sediment trap, to clean out
accumulated sediment. Maintenance is also warranted along the lower road ditch in the vicinity of the
office area, to clean out accumulated sediment.
