Samples were
collected from all wells which contained an adequate amount of water and from
Pond B which was discharging at the time. Samples were tested for oil and
grease and hydrogen sulfide. The results indicate that, at the time tested,
Well 30C was the only well with a measurable amount of sulfide but that Wells
336 and 30C both contained unusually high levels of oil and grease. This may
indicate that the source of the problem is above the Bourg property. It
should also be noted that the sulfide level in Well 30C had dropped significantly
since the first sample was taken, possibly indicating a downstream movement of
the pollutants.
Ponds A and B are no longer discharging. The torn pipe which carried
discharge from Pond B, not Pond A as noted in the inspection report, has been
repaired. The leak in the stand pipe in Pond A will be repaired as soon as
conditions permit.
I hope that this letter has clarified Walden Coal Company's position on
the issues discussed in your inspection report. If you have any further questions,
please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
~~ ~~
K, -
Kas
Resources Manager
cc: Mr. Walt Ayres
Enclosures: (3)
