NOTICE OF PROPOSED DECISION
In accordance with Rule 5.02.2(8) of the Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Boazd for Coal Mining, the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
proposes to approve a Reduction in Inspection Frequency (RIF) for the GEC Mine
(Permit Number C-81-037). The Division is proposing to reduce the inspection
frequency to two complete inspections per year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
This RIF is based on fmdings that the mine site has been stabilized and reclaimed and, at
this time, threat to the public or the environment has been minimized to the extent
possible.
The GEC Strip Mine is a surface coal mine located in Fremont County approximately
eight miles southeast of Florence, Colorado. The mine was operated by GEC Minerals.
The permit for the GEC Mine was revoked by the Mined Land Reclamation Boazd on 23
February 1984 and the reclamation bond was forfeited by the Mined Land Reclamation
Board on 11 June 1987. All forfeited bond monies have been expended on reclamation.
The legal description of the mine is portions of Sections 19 and 30, Township 20 South,
Range 69 West and portions of Sections 24 and 25, Township 20 South, Range 70 West on
the 6`~ Principle Meridian, Fremont County, Colorado. The coal interest is private and the
affected surface is private land. The pemut azea encompasses approximately 720 acres,
183.9 of which were pemutted to be disturbed.
Copies of the proposed decision are on file for public inspection at the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology, Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman, Room 215, Denver, Colorado,
80203, (303) 866-3567. Persons with an interest who maybe adversely affected by the
proposed decision may provide written comments. Such comments must be submitted to
the Division, to the attention of Jim Stark, within 30 days of the initial publication of this
notice, must be in writing and must state with reasonable specificity the reason(s) for the
request and the objection(s) to the proposed decision.
