III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology. This site is permit revoked and is on a reduced inspection
frequency of two inspections per year. Ground conditions were muddy with sporadic
snow cover. The weather was windy with periods of snow squalls. The site was
traversed on foot.
Hydrologic Balance
Three ponds remain at this site. Pond K is on the north side of the disturbance and
Pond A is on the east. Pond A is comprised of two small containments. All ponds
contained a significant amount of water likely from recent snow melt. None revealed
evidence of discharge due to the runoff. All embankments appeared in good condition,
showing no sign of damage or instability.
Revegetation
Although early in the growing season, vegetation is beginning to emerge. Smooth brome
dominates this site along with annual weeds, mainly bindweed. Soil moisture is good
which may improve the vegetative cover this year with continued regular moisture.
Excessive erosion does not seem to be a factor at this time. Without control over
grazing pressure, maintaining and promoting good vegetation at this site will be
difficult.
Overall, the mine site appears in fair for the early spring season.
3
