MINE ID N OR PROSPECTING ID ti M-2000-154
INSPECTION DATE 3-29-2001 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS SSS
OBSERVATIONS
This was apre-operational inspection conducted to observe the pre-mining condition of the site. Several photographs were
taken during this inspection.
The site has a significant portion of the surface area that is exposed sandstone devoid of soil. This area includes the two
drainage channels that cross the site. The majority of the exposed sandstone lies north of the West Fork of Dry Creek
occupying an estimated 70 percent of this area. The majority of the proposed permit area south of the West Fork has a
topsoil depth reportedly varying in depth from 0 to 10 feet deep.
Species noted on soil covered areas included big sagebrush, blue grams, cheatgrass, galleta, prickly pear, and pinyon pine.
No water was flowing in either channel. However, pools of water were noted in depressions in the drainage channel. No
soil will need to be salvaged from the drainage channels, so discharge of materials into waters of the U.S. should not be
a concern at this site given the specified method of mining and providing that no stockpiling of material or topsoil
application in the drainage channel will occur.
Erosion and sedimentation should not be a concern except for stockpiled soils or areas where soils have been replaced for
revegetation. The operator indicated that a small detention basin will be constructed as part of the first mining phase and
will be used as sediment control for the project. The pond inlet and outlet will use the existing drainage channel which is
located on the sandstone bedrock.
A wire fence is located along the county road. The operator will install a gate with a cattle guard in this fence line ai a
location at the top of a small rise in the county road approximately half the distance between the north and south permit
boundaries.
Several mule deer were noted adjacent to the site. Elk droppings were also noted on site.
(Page 21
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Steve Shuey at the Division's Durango Field Office.
