DECEIVED
January 25, 2000
JA.' ~ 8 ZOOU
Division of Minerals & Geolo9Y
This is a cover letter to explain to you why you are being sent this packet of
information.
We live in the City of Victor. We have lived here since 1990. When we moved here,
there was no active mining, there hadn't been any active mining for a long, long time
and there was no evidence that there would ever be active mining again.
Well, active mining did return to the district. They got their permits and proceeded to
mine. We have even written letters of support for the mining company on occasion.
Then the mining company started blasting in the open pit at the Cresson. We can feel
these blasts in our building. Our building is a 100 year old 2 story brick downtown
building which houses our tourist shop and our home. We have been in contact with
the mining company on this problem since 1994. They tell us that they are within their
permit and there is nothing they, or we can do.
Many of these blasts are big, they shake the entire building and all the contents. We let
the mining company know when the blasts are big so they can see if there is a pattern.
Just recently, they did change the timing, which has helped, somewhat, but that is only
after they have told us that "there is nothing we can do".
We have also been told that when they go underground "it will be worse" and when
they get deeper into the East Cresson "you will feel that too". We have also been told
"do what you have to do", "this is as good as it gets" and "that is the policy", well maybe
it is time policy is changed!
We agree that they have a right to mine, and they have a right to do whatever is
allowed on their own property. We do not agree, however, that they have a right to do
anything to our property. We have tried to be good neighbors and 'live with it', but we
can no longer do that! We feel we have the RIGHT not to have our building and our
home shook.
We have been talking to the mining in earnest since last February, it is now 11 months
later and we are not getting anywhere! So, we are sending this packet to you, the
others on the list and a few others. We are saying WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH and it is
now time to go outside for help.
We don't know if we can get anywhere, but when people are pushed far enough, things
happen. Look at Rosa Parks, Roe v Wade, Miranda... One person can change things
when they feel strongly enough, and believe me, we feel very strongly about our home
and our property being assaulted!
