III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999 MEMORANDUM
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
1313 SHERMAN STREET,RM 721
DENVER,CO 80203
DATE: February 18, 1999
RECEIVED
TO: File FEB 19 1999
FROM: Tom Browning Division of Minerals&Geology
RE: Site Inspection for CU/Flatiron property in Boulder
Background
On February 18, 1999 CWCB participated in a field visit to the above referenced site located
along the Deepe Farm Pit/South Boulder Creek floodplain. The purpose of the field visit was to
perform an inspection of the levee located along the southeast side of the gravel pit. The
inspection request was directed to the Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG), in writing, by a
representative of Neighbors for a Livable Boulder. Concerns about seepage areas along the toe
of the levee (landside) precipitated the inspection request. DMG then informed CWCB staff of
the inspection date and requested a CWCB representative to attend. The field visit attendance is
summarized in the table below.
Name Affiliation
Gregg Squire Division of Minerals and Geology
Alan Sorensen Division of Minerals and Geology
Tom Browning Colorado Water Conservation Board
Alan Taylor City of Boulder
Mike Hart Hart Environmental Consulting (representing LaFarge/Mobile)
Ed Smelko Homeowner/representative of Neighbors for a Livable Boulder
Summary of Findings
Based on site observations, engineering judgment, and discussions with those in attendance at the
time of the field visit, I have the following comments:
• The existing berm/levee appears to be in excellent condition with no significant problems due
to deep animal burrows, woody vegetation/tree roots, sloughing, settlement, sand boils, or
erosion.
• The placed riprap on the streamside of the levee is in good condition with no areas of missing
stones or wild growth.
